NBA legend Dennis Rodman is reportedly on his way to Russia, to the dismay of the White House officials.
The 14-year NBA veteran spoke with NBC News on the Brittney Griner situation, stating that he got clearance and will head over to the country to help the convicted WNBA star.
Rodman’s actions have drawn the ire of current officials within the White House. According to State Department spokesperson Ned Price, anything besides the established chain of communication will likely “complicate and hinder” the chances of bringing Griner back home.
Rodman is no stranger to approaching government officials overseas, having numerous interactions with the likes of Kim Jong-un, the Supreme Leader of North Korea.
The relationship between Rodman and Kim Jong-un spans a decade, having numerous visits to the country, accrediting his relationship as a catalyst for Korea’s release of American Kenneth Bae.
Griner was fined $16,301 and sentenced to nine years in prison for carrying hashish oil, an illegal substance in Russia, at a Moscow airport in February.
The star has been represented at numerous sporting events and ceremonies since being honored at the WNBA All-Star Game and last month’s ESPYs ceremony.
With each event stressing the need to bring her back to the states.
