American Airlines purchases 20 Boom supersonic aircraft

American Airlines announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to buy twenty Overture planes from Boom Supersonic, marking Boom’s second deal in two years now. The purpose of Overture is to travel at twice the speed of today’s fastest commercial airplane, cutting trip time in half to over 600 destinations worldwide. Overture is expected to carry passengers by the end of the decade.

United Airlines struck a similar deal last year, agreeing to purchase 15 Overture jets.

Derek Kerr, American Airlines’ Chief Financial Officer of American Airlines, took to Twitter to express his excitement over the agreement, “Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers. We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.”

The CEO and founder of Boom, Blake Scholl expressed pride and joy when it came to strengthening American’s competitive edge in terms of network, customer loyalty, and overall general airline choice. Boom and American accomplish this all while maintaining a vision of a more interconnected and sustainable world.

There is an option for American Airlines to buy an additional 40 aircraft; however, the deposit on the twenty Overture aircrafts is non-refundable.
