After pleading guilty to drug charges earlier this month to a Russian court, 2-time Gold-Medalist Brittney Griner may be on her way back to the states.
It was reported that a prisoner swap was offered by the White House, where the American Government will release Viktor Bout, a detained arms dealer, for Griner and fellow American prisoner Paul Whelan, who was detained on the accusation of espionage back in 2018.
In response, the Kremlin, the Russian government, implied that the matters of the deal should be handled privately.
When asked about the deal, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for the Kremlin stated that “such issues are discussed without any release of information.”
Peskov spoke on the Russian Government’s response, as he explained that “no agreements have been finalized” refusing to give any further information on the matter.
The WNBA star’s detainment has been referenced by many athletes over the past several months, including LeBron James’ sentiments on his HBO show, The Shop,
As well as Stephen Curry’s speech at the ESPYs this past week.
