NASA administrator Bill Nelson feels China is operating a military space program to gain sole control of the moon and went as far as to tell the country to stay out. He made these bold statements in an interview with Bild.
Zhao Lijian and China did not take these accusations lightly. Lijan, a spokesman at the Chinese foreign ministry, bashed the allegations calling them a “smear campaign.” Lijian added that this wasn’t the first time the head of NASA had “spoken irresponsibly about China.”
No statements have been made by either president of the two nations.
As tensions between the U.S. and China have been simmering, these accusations may cause the pot of diplomacy to boil over.
