Qatar World Cup 2022: Ukraine’s date with Destiny

The Ukraine national team is one win away from a World Cup bid in Qatar, a date with destiny when the country needs it the most.

Draped with their flags and taking in their national anthem pregame, Ukraine took down Scotland 3-1. They were led by goals from Artem Dovbyk, Roman Yaremchuk, and Andriy Yarmolenko.

The game is monumental in many respects, as due to the Russian invasion, it was heavily speculated that the team would not be able to compete in the qualifiers. Before yesterday’s win, the team had not played a competitive game since November, having last played against Borussia Mönchengladbach in a friendly on May 11th.

For fans and players alike, the World Cup berth marks a silver lining in an otherwise tumultuous time, as the last and lone time the country qualified for a World Cup was in 2006 when they lost to Italy 3-0 in the quarter-finals.

The deciding match will be against Wales on June 5th.
