The Wimbledon Open is without a contender after this morning’s announcement.
Italy’s Matteo Berrettini pulled out of the London tour after testing positive for COVID-19.
The announcement came a mere two hours from his round 1 matchup against Cristian Garin and a day after fellow tennis star, Marin Cilic, tested positive as well.
It was noted that last week, both players shared the same locker room with seeded players, including Wimbledon favorites, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal respectively.
The Rome native candidly spoke on his misfortunes:
“I have no words to describe the extreme disappointment I feel. The dream is over for this year, but I will be back stronger.”
A number 8 rank in the tourney, Berrettini was eliminated last year in the finals to current #1, the aforementioned Djokovic.
