WNBA star Brittney Griner, who after being arrested in February, is now said to be re-classified by the US Government as “wrongfully detained” in her arrest.
In a statement released to ESPN, a representative of the Biden Administration said that their team will do “whatever it takes” to bring the All-Star home, as “the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens will lead the interagency team for securing Brittney Griner’s release.”
The Mercury star will be honored by the WNBA with a floor decal and will be compensated for her contract pay ahead of the upcoming season opener on Friday.
The 31-year-old was arrested for finding vape cartridges containing hashish oil in her luggage. Griner has spent 75 days in detainment, being apprehended on February 17th.
If convicted, she can face up to 10 years in prison, a similar sentence to American corporate security executive Paul Whelan, who was arrested in December 2018 and sentenced to 16 years in prison on alleged espionage-related charges.
