Navjot Singh Sidhu, former cricket star and current politician has been arrested to a year in prison for his part in the murder of Gurnam Singh in 1988.
The case initially opened up following his death, when Sidhu was accused of manslaughter.
Singh Sidhu was 25 at the time, playing opening batsman for India’s cricket team. After a decade of hearings, the court acquitted Sidhu before the courts convicted him for manslaughter once more.
The conviction was appealed by his representatives, leading to them acquit him once more in 2018, but finding him guilty of “hurting the victim”, ultimately given a lighter sentence.
Sidhu was asked to pay a fine of 1,000 rupees, the equivalent of $13. Ultimately, the family had appealed and finally got their just-do.
Today, after 4 decades of hearings ruled in favor of the family’s claim, adding fines and a year sentence to the court order.
In his 16-year career (1983-1999) the cricketer had 3,202 runs at an average of 42 in 51 Test matches. The star then had forrays into commentating, acting, as well as in-office, most-recently acting as the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee up until last month, where he was succeeded by former transport minister, Amrinder Singh Brar.
