Carnival cruise ship catches fire in Grand Turk

On Thursday morning, a Carnival cruise ship caught on fire when it was docked in Grand Turk in the Turks and Caicos.

The Carnival Freedom’s funnel broke out in flames, sending dark black smoke into the sky. The flames were swiftly put out.

At about 8:45 am, the cruise line released a statement about the fire, saying that the cruise’s emergency response team was quickly activated and able to extinguish it.

“All guests and crew are safe, and the ship’s guests were cleared by local authorities to go ashore. We continue to assess the situation,” said John Heald, a spokesman for Carnival.

According to reports from onboard the ship, passengers were sent to their muster stations but were eventually dismissed and given permission to go ashore.

The Carnival Freedom set sail from Port Canaveral, Florida on Monday on a five-day cruise. The cruise line said it would be monitoring the situation to see if the ship would need to miss any of its upcoming voyages. It is next set to depart on a trip on May 28.

As of now, the cause of the fire is unknown.
