Fernandinho Stuns Manchester City, Leaves Club Before Seasons’ End

A year after signing an extension, team captain Fernandinho announces his leave of Manchester City ahead of Wednesday’s matchup against LaLiga’s Athletico Madrid.

The 36-year-old spoke at a news conference at the City Football Academy, discussing his reasoning for the matter.

The Brazilian is slated to return to his home country in what was a decision made alongside his family.

A talking point for his exit came from his playing time. Fernandinho made 23 appearances for the club this season, only starting six times in the Premier League.

The move came as a surprise to his peers and manager alike, as Pep Guardiola told the press: “You gave me the news” referring to the reveal of the midfielders’ announcement.

Despite the end of his tenure, Guardiola said that the team will play for him, fighting to reach the Champions League final in May, in order to give the vet the send-off he deserves.

Over his nine years with Manchester City, Fernandinho had won four Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and six EFL Cups.
