Djokovic, unvaccinated stars permitted to compete at Wimbledon

It was announced that England’s Wimbledon Open will allow unvaccinated players entry into the tournament, indicating that world number one-ranked Novak Djokovic will officially be eligible for the affair.

Sally Bolton, chief executive of the venue, All England Lawn Tennis Club stated in a news conference that: “The requirement set out by the government to enter the UK does not include mandatory vaccination,”

Djokovic has long made his sentiments known about the vaccine, as the Serbian star has missed out on events due to his non-vaccination status. The 20-time winner missed out on defending his Australian Open crown, potentially eclipsing the record for most Grand-Slams in Men’s history.

His storied ban from the tourney ended in a Grand-Slam win for current record holder Rafael Nadal, who currently holds 1 more than both Djokovic and Swiss star Roger Federer, who was sidelined with knee surgery after performing at Wimbledon last year.

Though not able to reign in Melbourne, Djokovic will have the chance to at least defend this crown, as the reigning and six-time champ at the event overall.

The Open takes place from Monday, June 27th to Sunday, July 10th.
