An upset had taken place in round 32 of the Monte Carlo Masters, as #1 world-ranked Novak Djokovic lost to the up-and-coming Spanish star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
The 22-year-old had bested the multi-time Grand Slammer 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-1 to head into the 3rd round.
When asked about the defeat in the press conference, Djokovic gave praise to the younger Davidovich Fokina, explaining the #46 ranked star had him “on the ropes the entire match.”
The world’s best had his serve broken nine times by his opponent, leading to a victory that for the Spaniard, was a dream come true:
“This win is so special to me because I grew up watching Nole and I’m a big fan of his.”
Djokovic comes up short in his return to the ATP Tour, as he was unable to play in tournaments this year due to his vaccination status.
