Valieva competes amid controversy

The controversy on ice continues, as the biggest story coming out of Beijing’s Winter Olympics surrounds Kamila Valieva.

The 15-year-old Russian star was embroiled in controversy after testing positive for Trimetazidine, a heart medication that was traced as an illegal substance.

The announcement delayed the medal ceremony, in which her team, led by her performance, would have claimed gold.

Fast forward to today, and the teenager took to the ice in an emotional fashion, notching an 82.16 score, despite many skeptics questioning the legitimacy of the rules and the games as a whole.

Yesterday, it was reported that the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) cleared the star to compete as information is disclosed.

The CAS cites “exceptional circumstances” as the reasoning, with news coming out that her positive drug test was alleged to be a result of a mix-up with her grandfather’s heart medication.

Valieva tested positive on Christmas Day, despite the news being disclosed after her standout performance last week.

The situation has been dissected by her peers and fellow Olympians alike. American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson reportedly claimed a double standard as to what differed from her situation and Valievas’.

Richardson last year was infamously banned from the Olympic games after testing positive for marijuana use ahead of her competition.

Sports commentators bashed the 21-year-old for not complying with the committee, as despite her reasoning being vocalized, became a polarizing figure due to that.

Valieva’s performance places her in 1st, as the investigation and the games continue as a whole.
