Next month will see a rebirth to the franchise formerly known as Redskin. The Washington Football Team announced earlier today that the organization plans to unveil its new team name on February 2nd.
The franchise ends its 2-year stance with their placeholder moniker, as the team drew much attention when they took down the long-scrutinized team name in the summer of 2020. The term “Redskins” drew the ire of the Native American community, as it drew back to the offensive racial undertones they had against them.
In a statement released by team president Jason Wright, the lead man said: “We are confident that this identity is one that our team and our fans across D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and beyond can rally behind for another 90 years and more as we continue to cheer on the Burgundy and Gold in this next chapter.”
The team reached out to fans with input for the upcoming team name. While the team eyes their 4th losing season in 5 years, they look onward to a new chapter with returning young star Chase Young and potential star prospect in the 2022 draft.
