A year removed from his absence due to COVID-19, Tennis star Andy Murray will suit up for the upcoming tournament.
The former Grand Slam winner was in high spirits with the announcement, expressing his sentiments on the return:
“I’ve had some great times in Australia,” said Murray. “Playing in front of the amazing crowds, and I can’t wait to step back out on court at Melbourne Park.”
Adding a big-time name to the fold, Tournament director Craig Tiley adds: “Andy is renowned for his fighting spirit, passion, and love of the game, and I’m delighted to welcome him back.”
He joins the likes of Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev who will participate in the Men’s bracket of the event.
Rafael Nadal, originally scheduled to be a part of the star-studded field, will likely miss the competition as he, similar to Murray last year, contracted the virus weeks leading up to the Open.
The games are scheduled to begin on January 17th.
