Central Michigan replaces Miami in Sun Bowl

The onslaught of COVID-19 seemed to hinder the chances of the all-important Sun Bowl. As with over $4 million in revenue on the line, CBS’ telecast is saved with a last-minute replacement for the marquee New Years’ Eve affair. At the cost? the cancellation of another.

College Football’s yearly Sun Bowl will have Washington State taking on Central Michigan in El Paso, Texas per Colin Deaver of KTSM. The Chippewas are replacing the Miami Hurricanes on Friday afternoon, as the team’s original matchup vs Boise State was canceled, partly due to an outbreak within the team.

On the business side, the game’s payout seemed to also play a factor in the result of the new schedule. The Sun Bowl, carried by CBS, is worth $4.55 million. By comparison, Arizona Bowl reportedly has a payout of $350,000.

Central Michigan enters the bowl game winners of their last four games by an average margin of victory of 19.3 points, averaging 41 points per game in that span. Washington State, who began the year 1–3 has won six of their last eight games.
